Siloam Springs Kayak Park Update

Post by LarryT » Fri Jul 17, 2015 7:16 am

If you have not been to the park since the big rains it has changed. 80% of the bottom hole is filled with gravel. Their is a gravel beach and you can almost walk over the entire section. The eddy is gone. When the water drops most of the bottom section will be too low for a kayak. It is now a "recreation" park. Hopefully the city will clean it out.

As a twenty plus year veteran of da ford, I can speak with some degree of accuracy.
The gravel bar was always there in what I call the PC days....(pre-construction)
After a large rain the gravel bar built up on river right, just below the wave.
After a few days of lower flows, the gravel bar eroded downstream.

As a one year veteran of The Siloam Springs Kayak Park I have no idea what the natural ebb and flow
will do per the build up of gravel and sediments.
There is a small budget in the city for cleanup and maintenance of the park.
However, before it is spent going in to replicate what nature might do for free,
let's give it a few weeks at low flow and see what happens.
I can say they are dedicated to keeping the park the best kayak park in the area.

There will be a period of maintenance this summer.
Work on the bottom wave will be performed, as to what else is to be done has yet to be determined.
Fighting for peace........
Isn't that like screaming for quiet?
