Caddo on Mon or Tues?

Post by cbarry » Sat Dec 14, 2013 12:54 pm

Anyone up for a trip from the Gap to Glenwood? Not sure about the water level, but the air temp should get up to 60.

Thanks. Cindy

Hey Cindy!

It's been so long since I was last able to float the Upper Caddo, it's great to open to the message board and just see the title of your post :D
It looks like the forecast is indeed for nice sunny days about all week, but I'm thinking the water will be a bit low. I haven't been back to float up there since the gauge was re-located this Summer however, I'm thinking the level will now need to read about 7.5 feet to equal that float we all made last when it was in the low 6.3 foot range which was about as low as I care to float that section. At any rate, I've been looking forward to floating it again when it was up enough to make a better evaluation.
Since you live over that way, perhaps you could take a look at the river right there at the Hwy 240 bridge at Caddo Gap and send us a report.
We hope you have a Great Christmas!

Best Regards
Jim

Hey Jim,

The last time I went the "new" gauge reading was 6.6' and I didn't have to drag any. I logged on to USGS today and it was 6.57', so I'm hoping I don't have to drag too much. I don't mind if I do. The canoe rental place is closed (for shuttle) so I hope someone can join me. I bought a laptop so I can use my boat more. See you later on this winter.

I live only a few miles from the Caddo. (Either day (I have cabin fever) works for me. If anyone has a preference of day/time let me know). How about meeting Tuesday 11am under the Glenwood bridge on hwy 70?

Jim,

I'm heading up to Glenwood tomorrow and will check the river at the 240 bridge, but I'm not sure I have enough experience on the river to make a good interpretation of the level. I will look to see if it is floatable as far as my old eyes can see and report back. Merry Christmas to ya'll and tell Marlo I said hey.

See you Tues under the 70 bridge at 11. Green truck, red remix. Cindy

Jim,
When we went that Saturday in June (week after Rec. School) and the level was 6.3', I'm pretty sure that was the new gauge reading. It rained here while I was at Rec School (13 inches) and that is what messed up the placement of the old gauge. I'm sure they had the gauge moved before we went the next Saturday. I've been before when the old gauge read 5.25' and had a good time. I think the folks at the rental place said to subtract 1.25' from the new gauge to get comparable data. I know you are the expert but I'm wondering about the 6.3' in your note. Anyway, even if we hit a few low spots, its got to be better than sitting in front of the TV. I'll let ya'll know how it goes on Tues.

See ya'll soon! Cindy

I checked out the Caddo at the 240 bridge. The water is low there but it looks do-able if you stay river left.

Cindy,

Thank you for your scouting of the river, and heading-up this float! I'm so pleased you will be getting out there tomorrow to enjoy the warm temperatures and clear waters. I regret not joining in on this trip, but will certainly look forward to your report on how enjoyable the day was. That Caddo Gap to Glenwood section has been a favorite of mine for many years. I have other doings for tomorrow, but will look forward to many good trips there in the coming year.
You will have a cadre of friends from our Canoe Club joining you there tomorrow that are just the best! I hope you all will have a great day!

Best Regards
Jim

Thanks Jim. I know how much you love this river. I'm kinda surprised to get a couple of people to meet me on my first try. You know I'm a bit "socially impaired" (smile) so I hope it goes okay.

Cindy,

Just take an extra trash bag  I've been walking a 'nature' loop around one of the lakes here in Benton most afternoons lately and seeing many geese, ducks, sea gulls, and so fourth, I'll just bet the Caddo will really be primed for some Osprey's, maybe an Eagle or two, and no telling what else since few people have probably been out there much this Fall. I know you'll have a very nice trip! Looking forward to your report.

Best Regards
Jim

I'll be interested in the report on correlating the actual floatable-level with the guage, too! Here I've been thinking the Caddo was floatable and holding... bummer!
