One always has a choice. Did you inhabit your land to enjoy it for it's natural appeal or to modify it to more of a humanistic type of environ in which the natural fauna cannot survive. Snakes do not hunt dogs. Dogs can be trained to not mess with snakes. Snakes do not hunt people. People can look where they step. I have been on your side of the situation and have needlessly killed many Copperheads and Cottenmouths. I now swim with the Cottenmouths (10 feet apart and no one cares ) and just carry a flashlight so YOU don't intrude on the proper inhabitant's space. Unless you are looking for a Copperhead you won't see one in the open until the day has turned crepuscular . Love your neighbor and remember why you want to be there! PS the snakes killed in your blog were probably 25 -30 years old. They were wise enough to avoid confrontation...

You bring up some valid points, George, and as I mentioned, I had some trepidation about killing them, but in the end I took the easy route and killed them, mainly because of my dog, who isn't trained (yet) and the kids who frequent my land, and who aren't always as vigilant as the adults.

But your points are well taken, and I'm always learning. Thanks for your feedback.
