Howdy,

Some buddies and I are heading to the Arkansas valley soon. Looks like the water will be at a nice level!

We're planning on camping around Buena Vista - any recommendations? I've camped at Ruby Mountain, but it's been about 25 years, so not sure what it's like now. We'll have a trailer and extra kayaks that we'll leave at the campsite during the day, so looking for something relatively safe.

Thinking we'll run fractions, pinnacle, then move up to Brown's canyon. May venture to the Platte or Eagle for a day as well. Let me know if you have any favorite class III or not-to-hairy IV runs.

If its still running above 2 grand when you are there and it might be. The resent drop might be because they had a cool snap out there so it might climb back up a bit. anyway fractions in the 1st couple of miles is probably harder definatly more continous than browns canyon at current flows.

might check out slaughterhouse section on roaring fork. 1000 to 1400 its alot like the numbers at 1500ish. slaughter house falls is an easy portage if your not sure of the line.

Don't ignore the Numbers because you think it's too high. Due to the road along it you can pick and choose. Check it out and maybe bite off little pieces.

Depending on the level, Taylor across the mountain to Gunnison area is a beautiful drive and a really fun little creek. very cold water any time of year but worth the drive.

Second the Taylor. About an 1:15 ish over cottonwood pass from buenna vista. Pretty drive. It's running bigger than normal this year and it's a hoot at these levels.

As far as the drive is concerned, drive over cottonwood pass, run the taylor, eat in Gunnison drive back over Monarch Pass thru Salida and get two scenic drives for the price of one

I would camp at arrowhead point it's between buena vista and put in for numbers section nice people live music most nights and my gear was always safe when I was not arround . There num is 719-395-2323 . There is forest service camping along the dirt road parallel to river as well sum is free and sum is around 10 bucks a night but no showers . You can shower in downtown BV at community building I think it's right by the play waves it's by the min and kept clean around 2 bucks a shower . But the arrowhead camp is much better and not much more per night than forest service camps . I have stayed at all the above and this is just my two cents worth hav a blast out there it's a great place .

Well, circumstances have pushed us east instead of west, but I will certainly use this info for the next opportunity I have to head to the Arkansas. Really do appreciate the good info.

Will be at the USNWC tomorrow! After that we'll work back west, maybe hitting the French Broad, Nolichucky, Ocoee, etc.
