Example of a river-wide partially submerged log
Check out this video starting at 2:00 minutes. I think first time I've ever seen this guy out of his boat! I didn't even see the river-wide log when I first watched the video but when I watched it again it was more obvious.

Agreed, UGLY! At first I was thinking with the correct angle and timing he could have made it over, but when I watched again I think I see what happened. His angle was set to keep him from going into an undercut area on the left bank; by the time you see the log things are just moving too fast to instantly implement a whole new game plan.
Trash: Get a little every time you go!

Reminded me of the SWR drill of the river-wide strainer with the PVC pipe over the rope (and doing it in fast forward). Ben comments under his breath he should not have been running the river at the speed he was taking it as the obstacle came on faster than he could react to it.

Re: Example of a river-wide partially submerged log
It is easy for us to watch the vid and speculate, but after a couple of times of watching I noticed the end of the log at far river right sticking up from a pretty good way upstream. There is no way you can tell it is river wide from very far upstream.
I think his only chance of not going under the log, would have been to try to slow his momentum however much he could and lean downstream into the log. He might have let his paddle go or thrown it and grabbed the log leaning into it and rode the log to far right. That would have been what (I think) I would have tried if it were me. But there was little time to react and these guys are pro's so this is a very good example of what can happen.
I always try to lean into anything I am about to get broached on and a good pair of elbow/armguards goes a long way to make this easier/possible.
