Creek Cleanup Video Featuring ACC'ers and a Litterbug Story

Post by Half Ton » Fri Jul 13, 2012 3:21 pm

This creek cleanup video has quite a few members of the ACC in it, but not anywhere near the number that turn out on a frequent basis.

Participating in Creek Cleanups can Help Protect Water Quality http://youtu.be/50XajYPghKQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So at lunch today I was driving through Taco Bell and almost had to get in a FIGHT with a person that did not like it when I pointed out to him that when he throws his cigarette but out the vehicle that it ends up in a stream or an animal. He told me that if I smoked I would throw mine out the window too....

When I told him that i smoke and that I don't toss the butts out the window he got agitated and said "so what are you gonna do a bout it?" and then I I said "so how big a boy are ya.....litterbug? Cause right now I'm PO'd and about to whoop your a$$ (one too many Roy D Mercer storys)! and when I'm finished I'm gonna report you!"

He got kinda scared and said so are you really gonna report me, and I said "yes I am but I wasn't going too until you started trying to defend your actions and allueded to my inability 'to do something about it' " :hammer2:

This is not the approach that I like or recommend anyone to follow through with just because it can lead to escalation rather than resolution.

Anyways, it got me to thinking about the subject and THE WAY that I like to go about dealing with the litterbugs.

Setting positive examples, and taking advantage of 866 811 1222 is the preferred way I think.

Be on the lookout for the litterbugs. Sadly, they are everywhere.

I generally don't like "cut-and-paste" posts, but in this case it seems appropriate...

I keep this number on speed dial. Haven't used it but once or twice, but it beats the frustration of doing nothing, and also beats risking a road-rage-escalation situation with a person of unknown mental stability and unknown armaments...

Toll Free Litter Hotline: 1-866-811-1222

With roadside litter an escalating problem throughout the state, The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) is using a Violator Reporting System and 24-hour, toll-free hotline to ask for motorist assistance in helping solve the problem.

Highway officials are encouraging motorists who spot a littering violation along any streets, roads or highways to call 1-866-811-1222 to report the situation. All types of trash and all types of vehicles are subject to be reported, whether a cigarette butt or whether thrown from a commercial vehicle, as long as the license plate number is provided.

Litter reporting phone calls are answered 24 hours a day by an office of the Arkansas Highway Police (AHP) who will record the incident. A letter will then be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle regarding the violation. Information about recurring violations reported from the same vehicle will be tracked and may eventually result in an in-person visit by an Arkansas Highway Police Officer to investigate the problem. The goal is not to issue citations, but to let both law abiding citizens and litter violators know this is a problem the AHTD takes seriously and will pursue thoroughly to enforce Arkansas litter laws.

Reporting a litter violation is quick and simple, while allowing the caller to remain unidentified. Motorists will need to provide the date and location that the littering occurred, a description of the vehicle including the license plate number and a description of the item discarded onto the roadway.

A few years ago, I was stopped at a light in Springdale. The car in front of me was a cop car. The driver finishes his cigarette and tosses it out the window. I decided it was my duty as a responsible citizen to report this litterbug. I did not have the litter hotline number, so, instead I just called 911. When the operator answered, I told her that I had a non emergency call and that I would like to report someone littering. She asked for the license plate #, which I gave to her. She sounded disappointed when I told her it was a cop that I was reporting. I hope she did something about it.
