It really depends on you. I like the versys. If I could only have one bike a KLR650 would be it.

Budget? Are you going to do anything with the bike other than ride 25 miles each way to work? Is your commute on interstate where trafffic moves 70-75mph? Riding experience?

It's nice to have some sort of hard luggage on a commuter. Lets you lock things up when off the bike and keeps things dry hopefully.

Go with what fits you and you enjoy riding. (fits size and personality) Riding is all about the enjoyment you get out of it.

I have an 03 R1 and Love it! (not a good first bike) Though It's pure pleasure riding but back before I worked from home I enjoyed commuting on it.

Just FYI most the V twins I have seen dont get as good MPG as the I4 so check that if you're looking to save money on gas.

I was about to talk about the 250 dual purpose bikes if the commute didn't have more than a mile of interstate. They get 70mpg, have cheap tires, and can be left downstream for a shuttle.

I ride a Suzuki V Strom and love it! The average mpg is 50-60 and it's a v-twin. If you are commuting or doing a little sport touring, the versys would be the one because of the seating position, but that's only my opinion. They are both good bikes.
