Hot Springs Creek, an urban jewel of a Class III run, is getting a spring cleaning on Saturday, March 26; meet me at the cleanup headquarters by 9:00 A.M. (see info and map below) to qualify for the freebies. I will take a group to the section that we paddle and show you the access points and the big rapids and the lines through them. This creek is an excellent step up from Class II runs like the Cadron and the Caddo, not real difficult, but plenty entertaining. There's not much trash in the creek so we will also trim some brush. Bring some loppers to trim some of the face slapping branches. A small hand saw may also be useful; I'll have a chain saw in my truck in case we find any deadfalls. You are never more than a few feet away from a road on this creek (handy for chain saw work), but it feels like you are out in the wilds when you paddle it. Be prepared to get your feet wet, so bring some shoes to change into. IF IT HAS RAINED (not in the forecast), BRING YOUR BOAT AND WE WILL PADDLE THIS TWO MILE CREEK. Arrive early to be sure they don't run out of free T-shirts!

The Great American Greenway Clean up

On March 26th the second annual Great American Greenway Clean up will take place all along the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail, and nearby roads. This event is a joint project with the Friends of the Parks, Hot Springs/Garland County Beautification Commission, Hot Springs Parks and Recreation Dept., and the Hot Springs Sanitation Dept. Over a hundred volunteers are expected to come out to clean up as an official part of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup. The first one hundred volunteers to check in at the clean up HQ at the New Farmers Market will receive a special free T shirt! The Clean up will start at 9:00 am and keep going through noon, there will be free gloves, bags, and loan of grabbers for the volunteers. Come on out and show your civic pride all along this very special area of Hot Springs, the Hot Springs Greenway Trail.

Bump! Just like the creek, a solid rock bottom, ledge filled, bumpy ride!

Hope to see you there.

There's a chance of rain in the forecast, so don't forget your boat!

I will be available for shuttling and filming, but a ruptered disc in my back is going to keep me out of a boat.

Rain or shine, the event takes place.

A big environmentally conscious thanks goes out to Beth Forbes and Tim Jones for helping make the creek squeaky clean! It's always a pleasure to share time with paddlers who get excited when they see an exciting new place to paddle.

The Greenway project in Hot Springs is a marvellous example of how people can enhance an urban waterway. Lots of dedicated volunteers have helped make this streamside walking trail a reality. A trail extension is planned all the way to Lake Hamilton, and may provide a parking area at what will become the new take-out, a few hundred yards beyond our present access. Two more foot bridges are planned in the trail extension, hopefully high enough for us to paddle under. I will stay in touch with parks director, Jean Wallace, as those plans develop.
