Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge is celebrating the outdoors during their first annual Fall Festival!!
September 18, 2010, 9AM – 3PM at the Refuge Visitor Center, Crossett, Arkansas
They are inviting the ACC to participate in their first ever annual Fall Festival. The refuge is providing this event as an open house to display all that the refuge has to offer to the neighboring community of Crossett and other surrounding cities.
Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters in Hot Springs will be loaning a variety of boats for us to take to the event.
Hunting and fishing have been the most popular pastimes within the refuge. They are realizing that the refuge has much more to offer people from all walks of life to enjoy other interests such as hiking, gardening, bird watching, canoeing, recreational kayaking and more. The festival will showcase a variety of hands-on outdoor activities to encourage youth and their families to get connected with nature.
This promises to be a great event. Everyone is invited to come and bring your families. The refuges are great places to paddle and see wildlife. Come help promote the ACC, have a good time in the process and support the refuge, supporting OUR natural resources!

It may be enough to drag me away from the UP of Michigan. Weather here is near perfect. I will be back for the Rendezvous and I would like to do this also. Thanks Debo for posting.

Great to see interest rising for this event. I am thinking about staying in the area and staging an adventure paddling trip into the Felsenthal Refuge proper on Sunday. Any interest there?

I am interested in this trip. May have one or two more that would go. Not sure exactly where this place is, except near Crossett. Will have to check into it. But all trips with Debo are good!

I thought you'd never ask!
I had no idea either, but I love Google + Google Earth

Headquarters N33.1483 W92.0572
Boat Ramp N33.1479 W92.0995
Note, right now they are talking to DeBo about doing something at headquarters, but she may try to get it moved to the boat ramp because the pond at the headquarters is only about 200 feet at the widest. More to come on that later.
Also, when I say "Boat ramp", that is of course only one of several in this refuge.
What was that you said Minna?

Now I know where it is. Close to the Louisiana border. That's pretty interesting location. You know there is all that stuff that goes on down in South Arkansas. Like the Gurdon lights and bigfoot (should that be two words?). That's what it is. Felsenthal is french for Big Foot. Mr Foot resides in this bayou. The heck with getting a picture of that stupid woodpecker. I'll get a picture of the Foot Man on this trip. Yeah! Thanks Cowper for giving me the exact location. Very helpful.

I'm glad I looked at the map, I had it in my head that it was the area you all usually go east of LR...Cache River, White River area...I might actually make this one; it's something I'd like to support... it's only a little over 4 hours away
I see the paddle is Sunday, so I will have to try to make another one.

I am at the library at Escanaba, Mich and about to return to the No Cell/Internet Zone so I won't be able to respond to this for a few days . . . but . . . Debo, is there a place to camp within the refuge that requires getting there by boat. If so for those attending "Canoe Camping 101" at the Rendezvous, this could possibly be a chance to put learned skills into practice.

That sounds like a great idea Richard. At 65,000 acres the only problem would be deciding where to camp. Here is the link to the refuge:
http://www.fws.gov/felsenthal/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And here is a link to a google earth shot of the area:
http://www.maplandia.com/united-states/ ... elsenthal/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Let’s discuss more and come up with a plan at Rendezvous.
