What time will Shuttles to Remmel Dam be run? Should people go to Porterfield first and arrange shuttles from there?

Re: Surf & Turf
Not sure what plans there are on a down river trip...I didn't organize one, but my guess would be that if you show up around 9 or so, people will be organizing a trip. If anyone is planning a down river trip, please post it up with details.

Re: Surf & Turf
Jeremy, I was just visiting with a lady with the same question. She may want to go with the earlier trip in the morning, so if anyone is going at that time, it would be nice to know who.
For myself, I am looking forward to visiting in the morning at Porterfield's then have lunch when it's ready. Afterward, about 12:45-1pm, I plan to head to the dam for an afternoon float back. I will again plan to bring my 16ft. utility trailer so as to haul as many boats and folks up as I can.
I'm taking applications for one nice person to ride up and drive my rig back to porterfield's :)
Best Regards
Jim

One thing on the down river float, I would think about if you're planning on eating lunch would be the possibility of there not being any food left after a morning float.

Re: Surf & Turf
I can run a group in the morning in my 15 passenger shuttle van. or can run folks back to thier cars in the evening when enough people want to go. just give me a buck a person for gas and we will call it a ACC group deal! Let me know ahead of time because I run a canoe rental down here and will need to work around normal business. But I am down to help my fellow ACC Members!
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Surf & Turf
Hello all,
A new member here. I don't want to just jump in and show any disrespect or improper edecate, so please forgive me if I do. My two sons and myself bought kayaks last year and we have done a few trips, pretty tame, like the Mulbery etc. but we would really like to get some more time in the kayaks. We are not familiar with the Quachita whitewater park etc or the Surf and Turf and was just wondering is this something we should attend or would it be something that we would be in over our heads. My sons are 11 and 14. I would still classify us as beginners. Also if it is something we could do then do we need skirts or other special equipment. We have vest, paddles and boats. Any information on the Surf and Turf would be appreciated.
Thanks :)

Nature Lover,
I think you and yours sons would love the event of Surt N Turf. Great way to meet a bunch of boaters from the area and to learn tons about boating. Very friendly bunch of people that you will find are very helpful.
Not sure of the type of kayaks you have but they sound like they might be more of the recreational type of kayak than say a whitewater kayak since you asked about if you would need a skirt.
Skirts are necessary for most whitewater boats as they tend to sit lower in the water and would fill up with water without a skirt even in the mildest rapids. Rec boats tend to sit a little higher in the water and won't fill up as quickly.
I have friends that paddle in rec boats with no skirt and they do fine. The section of river from Remmel Dam to the River Park is suitable for a rec boat. When you hit the ledge at the Park you will most likely swamp the boat when you go through the waves.
Give us some more info on the boats you are using and the folks on this forum can better advise you on suitability for the Ouachita River and offer advice on additional gear you may want to acquire like floatation for the boats.

Re: Surf & Turf
Sounds like "Surf and Turf" is where you should be this weekend.
The trip down from the Remmel Dam to Rockport/Turner bridge is a pleasant "float" with no water features of note -- you could sleep and drift -- until you reach the water park where there is a river wide rock ledge that offers great play-boating and surfing -- may be a little crowded but it's a big long ledge. If you're new to kayaking you'll find lots of people to offer a helping hand or instruction if you haven't much playboating under your belt -- and the play wave is good for paddlers of nearly ever level of experience/skill.
Surf and turf has everything -- first you'll meet some of the most actively enthusiastic paddlers in the state -- great source of information, shuttle bunnies and people to run lead and sweep. And when you get that many boaters together you'll find equipment swaps and sell, instructional clinics and classes, crazy entertainment (albeit the ramp of death won't be there this year), vendors with new equipment, etc.
Most importantly -- it's near water and with a heat index approaching 110 this weekend -- Surf and Turf be the place to be.
And if the water rises and you live close to the Mulberry -- another alternative is to check out Byrd's on the Mulberry this weekend where Zen is having an "electronica hoe-down" -- 2-3 days of music, swimming, and "fun in the sun" with the expectation that good things are about to happen.

Re: Surf & Turf
Sorry forgot the info on the boats. We have pongo 100's I am sure not the high tech you guys are using but they where within budget(on clearance) and a way to get started. We have fished a bit out of them as well and they work great as long as the fish is not too big. LOL.
