Caddo River, Sunday

Post by Jim Krueger » Sat Jun 12, 2010 8:28 pm

Going to float from the Swinging Bridge to Glenwood in the morning to survey the river and flood plain. The level should be about 7 feet, or in the upper six foot range. Meeting at the Glenwood bridge at about 10:30 or so to shuttle up.

Jim

Karla,

If you and Minna care to trail us over to Hot Springs for breakfast, we will be leaving the house NLT 8:30am. or we can just meet you all at the bridge at the appointed time, whatever your pleasure.
Other interested paddlers also welcome, the river will be still fairly fast-paced and with unknown strainers/hazards to approach.

Best Regards
Jim

Jim several trees down. Arrowhead sent a boat down this evening to try and make clear. The Bridge at swinging Bridge has several large trees hung on it, was passable today on Left. Leaving Norman about a half mile down the remains of an RV is a site. It is boatable from Norman down there is a riverwide stainer plainly visible 300 yards above the swinging bridge. Also after coming under the first power line down from Norman there is an S turn choked with root wads and trees. I was able to navigate but with less water probably won't be fun.

Thanks for the report Adam! As we launched at the Swinging Bridge this morning I visited with a couple(former ACCers) from Oklahoma who had just finished the same trip you made from Norman. They too indicated just what you mentioned.
The river was about 7.35 still this morning when the five of us set off to Glenwood. The trees and vegetation along the river and back in the flood plain sure got worked... At the ends of several long eddy's with sharp turns, you could see where the river just plowed straight down through the flood plain to rejoin the river course. The river in this section is pretty much OK, free of strainers, the only exception we encountered was at the head of one of my favorite rapids, 'Lunchtime Rapid', (1/4 mile upstream of the South Fork of the Caddo),it was formerly a clear passage, now has one 'Buffarilla' root ball with attached large tree blocking the entrance to the rapid, river-wide...

Best Regards
Jim

Hey Mark,

Yes, Caddo River Outfitter in Glenwood and Arrowhead both had renters out on the river yesterday. The water level should be very nice today.
From Lifejackets report on the Norman run, and a note I had from Ron (CRCR), the Norman run has a big strainer above Swinging Bridge, and there are a couple of areas below Glenwood that will need some attention but the Caddo Gap to Glenwood run is fine, with the exception of the one tree at Lunchtime Rapid, just portage that and enjoy the rest of the rapid.
Have a nice day!

Best Regards
Jim

I've felt the touch of healing hands, neath the willow trees and birch, cause the water's my religion, and the river is my church. Kenny
