Buffalo River - SPRING BREAK - LEVELS GOOD - waiting for ...

Post by Richard » Sat Mar 20, 2010 1:29 pm

I am waiting for a call back from the Pruitt ranger station to see what the status is on getting in and out of Kyles and Steel Creek. Water looks great but access may be a problem.

==================
As I looked at the weather forecast the best days this week will be Mon-Thur. Would anyone be interested in base or canoe-camping? I will need to be off the river on Thursday.

This does not change plans for the weekend. That is still on.

Its spring break.

Water and weather should be just about perfect.

We are off on spring break and my wife, three kids and another family are planning to float from Ponca to Kyles Landing on Tuesday Mar 23. We will not be camping but would welcome company on the river on Tuesday.

With this group, conditions need to be near ideal, so if water levels get too high or temps are too low, we will just hike in the area. However, right now it looks like conditions will be perfect.

Is the condition of the roads that bad? You have to have 4WD to get in and out?

The road to Kyles is one lane and steep. Passing is difficult. It is on a north slope that gets very little sunlight so it is the last to thaw and when it thaws it becomes messy and slick. That's why I am waiting for an on the ground report. They have not called back yet.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I remember one fall a few years back it was pretty bad after a major T-Storm rolled thru during the night we were camped there.

I just got a call from my daughter and she is coming to visit so I will not be going . . . at least for Tuesday and probably Wednesday as well. When I get a phone call from the NPS I will post what they have to say about Kyles here.

I called Tyler Bend. No one will be in the Pruitt station until Wednesday. Teri seemed to think Kyles will be accessable tomorrow but I have my doubts. Anyway, it looks like I am out for mid week. This weekend is looking good.

Looks like we're headed somewhere on the Ouachita or...? Richard would really like to make this weekends float with you but we have to be home by Sat. afternoon late. Maybe some other time.

I'm headed out tomorrow to either Buffalo or Mulberry and I've got 4wd and I'm very familiar with the road up/down to Kyles. If either of you are headed out, I would love to share and shuttle.

I floated Ponca to Kyles yesterday. Access in and out of Kyles was no problem. The access road has dried out nicely from this week's snowfall.
