M-wave

Post by mgood » Mon Feb 22, 2010 2:43 pm

Where exactly is the m-wave in colorado located? I've heard it's near montrose, but have no idea on what river/where it is. Also, if anyone has a gauge for this, I'd like to see it. Thanks

Rule #1 Don't talk about the M-wave.

Goto http://www.mountainbuzz.com/forums/ and do a search. Lots of info about it.

Why you don't talk about it:

MONTROSE — The first rule of the M-Wave is: No one talks about the M-Wave. Just to be clear, that's the second rule, too.

Of course, both those rules were broken a long time ago, whether by the guys who established them or by those sucked in by the mystique, the allure of taboo. They simply couldn't help themselves.

Still, you won't find a map to the Montrose Wave in any guidebook, and you won't find an aquatic feature like it anywhere else in the state.

Mountain Buzz will have some good info. But here is my summary on it.

Goto google earth and look for an irrigation ditch in Montrose and you will find it. There are a few spots in the irrigation ditch that are deadly so keep that in mind as well.

The biggest reason for the secret is that is that it borders private land and people do not want to jeopardize the location. Common sense applies in this regard. Drive slow on the roads, keep the area clean, Dont be loud... etc.

The vibe there is much cooler than you would expect. Back a few years ago it was like an exclusive club of those who knew and did not know. You got the feeling that you were going to get your as# kicked if you went.

The eddylines are crazy and will wear you out. Granted I was about 10 lbs over the wieght range for the boat I was paddling. In 17 years of boating this was the only day I left with blisters on my hands. This is not a place for learning for sure. If you are compitent in big water condidtions, surfing really fast waves, blunts, and such then you should do fine.

The gauge for it is listed as an obscure listing. I found it on the USGS site under a montrose irrigation ditch.

I dont suspect it will be turned on for a while. And I think that it gets better later in the summer.
