Canoe bilge pump

Post by h20gasm » Thu Jul 16, 2009 8:21 pm

Gonna put one in my Dagger Ovation looking for some input on what to use battery wise. I've been told to use a motorcycle battery but this seems a little heavy to me and dont know how well it will hold up a charge to the cold weather. Looked at NIMH and LIPO but the lipo seems a little expensive but willing to spend the extra bucks if it's worth it.
Any input will be appreciated!!! Looking forward to paddling with some open boaters this fall .

Thanks H20gasm

I use a 12v lead acid battery with my set up (alarm panel type battery)
a little on the heavy side but inexpensive, have it mounted behind the
saddle on my Ovation

I've got 2 canoes set up with the same battery type Wayne has, and 1 with a Lipro. Much prefer the Lipro, but having problem with getting the supplier to respond in order to get another. There is a long thred on C1B1. Dale

I hope this helps. It took me a while to get good info from boaters that would work. The whole system weighs less than 10 pounds. The hot is broke with a single toggle switch. I used 1" tubular webbing to secure the battery and pumps in with snap buckles.(like the ones that are on pfd's) I built a thwart and put it behind the back rest to support my back and also have a place to secure the discharge lines. The boat full of water takes probable 2-3 minutes to empty. The complete system cost around 150.00-175.00 and was purchased at a local marine dealer.

Those batteries are available at many electric parts stores and also some sports stores-Gander Mountain, Bass Pro (they use them for automatic feeders. Might be a seasonal stock item though.?)
