Lake Wilhelmina Spillway

Post by FarPastGone » Fri May 15, 2009 12:08 am

Last Sunday we got the chance to go check out Lake Wilhelmina Spillway on the way down to the Cossatot. I had been looking at it for a little bit, and when we got out there and saw water...knew it was good to go. Jeremy Meyer (jermdog), some of my buddies from Texas (Bret, Jerry, and Richard), and I gave her a couple laps and then headed for the tot. Never heard of anyone running it, so here is a little bit of beta and some pics...

First off, this is definitely not a destination run, so don't plan a day around it...it is right outside Mena, so if you are coming from Ft. Smith or NWA to the tot then it may be worth the detour. I would say it is probably Class III+...probably harder if it is really cranked. There are 5 drops, there first of which is the concrete from the spillway actually dropping 6-8 ft on to rocks...so you need a little bit of water for the first one to be runnable (not for the landing, but so you don't get hung up on the concrete). Everything else is good to go, my favorite part is the last drop because it is a 10-12 ft low angle slide that you run, then surf the hole or ferry the pile from the hole directly into a Zoom Flume esque chute.

Image
Drops 2 and 3, there are a couple places you could get pinned in the 3rd drop so check it out before you fire it up.

Image
Drops 1 through 4; 1 being the drop off the concrete slide, and 4 being the first of two low angle slides.

Image
Follow the leader above the 5th drop.

Have fun!

We rocked the long boats on the tot. Jeremy didn't want to risk tearing up the bottoms on the boats on another sharp spillway run.

Thanks for letting me use your boat by the way.

Joe I honestly don't know. That area around Mena has had a ton of rain in the last three weeks, so I am guessing the lake is pretty high. I would bet that if you checked it out with in a day or two of an inch or more of rain she might be in. If you have to go through Mena to get to the tot it is just outside of town.

Take Hwy 8 West out of Mena and then just take a right on either Polk County Rd 125 or 129. Just go down one or the other for about a mile and you will be at the lake...the spillway is right there where you meet the lake.

The ranger out there was very cool, he didn't have a problem with us being out there, so everyone be cool if you go out there.

Yeah my buddy Bret and Jerry both have HD Cameras, and took footage out there.

It is kind of funny...my buddy Bret has been up here twice, and he has film of Richland Creek (x2), Lake Norrell Spillway (x2), Crooked Creek, Little Mo Falls, Tot at 7+ ft in long boats, Wilhelmina Spillway, and then a couple of runs we didn't film. Needless to say I need to invite him up more often.

It was something like that I believe. None of the pictures from my camera of our spillway tour were that great, it was in action mode, and it really drops the quality I guess.

Didn't you get some on your video camera? Thought Center got a couple.
