Volunteer Urgently Needed: Kings River

Post by DeBo » Thu Dec 04, 2008 5:17 pm

During the floods this year a bridge was washed out and gravel was deposited in the area near a bridge on the Kings River. I am not familiar with exactly where this is but the county is threatening to just go in and scoop out the gravel. What's the big deal, right?

Well ADEQ, AGF a and some other agencies want to convince them to do this the right way with proper bank stabilization etc. Some in the area are apparently affeard of lettin' big gov'ment get involved. You just never know; let 'em stabilize your stream bank and before you know it.....One World Government!

They need support from some rational folks who use the river at a meeting in Carroll Co. Monday night. We might even offer some ACC help or something. I would go but I'm afraid I live too close to Little Rock to be trusworthy either.

The meeting is 6:00pm, Monday, Dec 8, 2008, at the Carroll Electric Coop building in Berryville with the Carroll Co. Cattlemen's Association to discuss in-stream gravel removal and bank stabilization and the permits and authorizations that cover these activities. Someone from the Ar Game and Fish Stream Team and the Corps of Engineers as well as ADEQ will be there also.

Someone please step up and do this. After all it could be fun

there are a few bridges along the kings, up stream near kingston, the one on hwy 412, a low water at marble two other low head dam type's between marble and marshal. the hwy 62 bridge between eureka ,and berryville. that one is a big gravel bar, and has always been a mess. it's right behind the old hwy dept. shop,... they used gravel for a redi-mix plant ,back in the day. and the last are at grandview, then hwy 86 ..

I'd be willing to attend as I frequent that area often; today mtn bikin up around that area. Also with the White River of West Fork Streamteam and volunteer with Get Hooked on Fishing not on Drugs. I am under the impression that I would take notes and report back to you, Debo?

Be nice to know if Painter Bob could attend also? I'll be in touch.

Two Cents: I concur Debo -- I've generally found in my dealings with folks in northern Arkansas that they don't look kindly to strangers -- and especially "city folk" -- come tellin' them when, where, what and how to do things. The best people to offer help and advice are probably those people who actually live in the watershed and thus one might want to solicit the Kings River Watershed Partnership to facilitate any restoration or bank stabilization projects that may be forthcoming.

Thanks CB, it definately should be someone who knows the area and lives a lot closer than I do. I put out a call to the coordinator of the Kings River Watershed Partnership two days ago but haven't gotten a response yet.

Sugar, If you can go that would be great! Check your PM

ok , i'm on board with this! ... took a little road trip to see whats up, the game and fish access at hwy 62 is in (bad shape). kings river outfitters ,also piled high with gravel, ( forgot about the bridge at hwy 21 or 221.) but they have also been working on the osage river at 412 and 103, you can google map it up and see the white lime stone rip rap along the banks and it looks like the built jetty walls... guess we missed that one ! seems they also installed a water line under the kings at hwy 412 at the kings river store at marble. in the last few months.. (what else does a watch dog need to be looking at?) as this is my first assignment!......... but, i do speak burr-ville

DeBo -
I'm heading up there tonight. Got your PM and will be in touch! I may not be from around here but I do actively involve myself with environmental issues! chow................
