Temps are a factor for sure. Don't need a super warm bag for some trips, so consider adding a summer time bag to the list. They take up less space too.

Yep it is like finding the perfect boat, can't have just one.

My "PJs" double as my dry change of cloths (or vice versa) in case I take an unexpected swim (or get caught in a downpour while backpacking). The great thing about them is I don't sweat in them all day and stink them up and I can take them off if it is too hot or put on if too cold.

Got to add my 2 cents. North Face Cat's Meow, 20 degree bag will keep you comfortable even when wet. Many wet damp nights on the appalachian trail and it's snug as can be. packs nice in it's own bag but you can buy a compression sack that will cut the size in half. for warmer weather, not hot but 35 degrees up, north face makes a lighter bag that packs much smaller and is lighter and would do well for most of the time here. i also learned that in extreme conditions, i can put a pair of my briefs on my head and be comfortable for an additional 10 to 15 degrees. hang your bags by their loops in your closet when not in use and they'l last a lifetime. fluff up in the drier every now and again. have never had a down bag so can't compare but can't imagine being any more comfortable and maintenance free than my synthetics. and also, the pad is an integral part of the sleep system. as someone stated, when you are out in the wild on a miserable night, the $20 you saved on cheap equipment is not going to seem very relevant.

Pad? Big Agnes Insulated Air Core. And a blue foamie under in frigid temps. I'm a side sleeper and it cured my sore hip and shoulder from trying to sleep on the blue mat alone.
