Norrell 7-20-09

Post by Lazer » Mon Jul 20, 2009 3:10 pm

Reports are that Norrell is running big this afternoon. Also the bridge across the creek on the main road in is closed due to flooding, so you'll likely need to come in from the North side of the lake.

I didn't make it up to Norrell on my little motorcycle today just to gawk, but I do think I know the creek bridge you mention. Saline county probably spent over a hundred thousand dollars to replace this crossing with a big fancy concrete bridge in the last couple of years. I don't doubt the bridge was high and big enough to span the creek when in flood but in my various trips up there, wondered if they had forgotten they might need to build up the road leading to it.

Best Regards
Jim

Norrell was sweet today in a GIGANTIC, IMMENSE, HUGE(you get it) Grizzly Bear kind of way :hammer: ... I pressed a couple personal boundaries today  (think I made custom hand prints on my paddle so freak in scared!) by being the first to run from the top down… wasn’t pretty but it was in my boat. Did the Zig-Zag half of the way underwater then pulled a roll to finish the pillow up-right and solid, only to hit the first hole in the staircase with no speed... oh yeah RODEO was on :hammer: :hammer: used all of the tricks, 9 life’s and a prayer or two to get myself out. I finished this run with very little incident. I could only manage two runs today(normally 5 or 6 ) I just can’t express how darn scary this thing is  .
Will have some video to follow up with later.

The road was washed out on the east side of the bridge (road is much lower elevation than bridge). Road crews had spread new gravel to make the road passable by the evening.

Norrell was handing out some :hammer: yesterday. Several swimmers and ghost boat rides, several near swims and lots of bracing.

With more rain coming in, it has a good chance of running today as well. Go get you some :hammer: time.

I just noticed the front page picture of the Canney Creek bridge in the Benton Courier that Lazer mentioned
Did any of you paddlers take any photos or video of your spillway runs?
The paper mentioned 6" of rain in a three hour period that day...

Best Regards
Jim
