Post by Renee H » Mon Aug 25, 2008 8:50 am

Okay, folks - here's your chance to learn to row. Beginning in September, you'll have three choices as to Learn - to- Row opportunities. Clinics cost $200 per clinic for non-members (no charge for members). Cost of the clinic will go towards membership in the Arkansas Boathouse club if you decide to join within one year of taking your clinic. The cost of the "Give it Try" row does not apply toward membership.

Participants in the clinics (month-long and intensive weekends) MUST complete a swim test. We also ask that you sign a waiver, as well. I've been a member of ABC since before it was a reality. The inclusion of the cost of the clinic in a membership is a real deal!! I paid $275 and traveled to St. Louis to get my basic course... The ABC is up and running and is putting shells on the river now... and has just acquired a 4-place shell. It's a great sport!! Jump in!!

I wish so much that I did not live and work so far from the boathouse. I was able to attend one meeting, but I know now that I just won't have time to get involved. I still get the emails. I rowed in college, coxed for a group of older rowers who were in the Hudson River Rowing Club, and coached crew at the Emma Willard School in its first year of having crew as a sport. Emma Willard was a school where most students were already playing three seasons of sports, so crew drew mostly students who had never been in team sports. Somehow they thought that crew was not a team sport! The experience was life transforming for all us. There is no other feeling in the world than the rhythm of a shell when everyone is pulling together: arms, back, legs, legs, back, arms, all in perfect, controlled motion. I suppose it is a bit like paddling in a paddle raft, but the smooth coordination is like nothing else! Rowing has a really cool history in Little Rock too. I'm glad it's coming back and wish the club all the best!
