Boatable days on the 'Tot thus far - a study

Post by Ouachitoff » Tue Aug 26, 2014 11:19 am

I'd been wanting to play with the USGS gauge data from the Vandervoort, AR gauge on the Cossatot for a while now. With all the rain so far this year, I thought it would be fun to figure up how many days of boating down there we've had so far.

Source info: (01/01/2014 to 8/24/2014)
http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv? ... 2014-08-25

First, I narrowed the data down to first and last gauge reading of each day. Then, I went through and removed days where the first reading (midnight) was below 3 ft. I decided to remove the days where the river was below 3 at midnight but got a heavy rain and rose rapidly throughout the day, then starting back counting again the next day.

Results:
Longest stretch without a boatable day: 6/13/2014 to 7/9/2014 = 49 days :(
longest stretch of boatable days: 11 5/08/2014 to 5/18/2014 (and what a great 11 days that was)

Total # of boatable days: 85! :kayak:

Here is a link to my data set if you'd like to have a look.

Bro Steve, I know how you calculate. I'm skeptical of the whole mess. All I care about is how many days I got to boat. NOT ENOUGH.

Ouachitoff: Thanks for all the hard work.

No problem. Thanks to my PC and some scripts I use at work it was fairly simple.
