Wattensaw Bayou

Post by MikkiW » Thu May 05, 2011 5:56 pm

Paddled the Wattensaw today with a small group of friends. Water is still rising in White river and bottoms are extensively flooded. It was a really nice sunny day and we saw many snakes basking. Paddled into Small lake on the Wattensaw WMA and this area seemed to have a very concentrated population of cottonmouth moccasins. Saw only a few in any other areas. Found a dry land box turtle clinging to a floating log and gave him a ride to high ground. Three blue racers were also seen in the trees. One was a male and female pair found together. Debbie nearly got crowned by a large fox squirrel who misjudged the distance between limbs and did a high altitude belly flop from about 30' up. He hit the water with a resounding crack right next to her canoe and seemed very embarrassed that this missed leap had been witnessed by so many persons. Our laughing so hard at him probably didn't help any either. A very enjoyable day!

White River continues to rise. The water flooding this house was right up next to the road this morning and this afternoon when I went home it was starting to creep up across the road. Look at the sign in the front yard. Water was about 3-4" higher later in the day than it was this morning.

Sorry, no pictures of the sky diving squirrel. It happened too fast and we were laughing too hard.

water starting to creep over Hwy 33 between Roe and DeValls Bluff. It has risen about 6-8" in this area since this morning. This road will probably be closed soon as the rise continues.
