I originally posted a request for recommendations for a river trip with my 18 year old son. We wanted something exciting but not to difficult.
Well, that is not going to happen because of scheduling issues.
Now my wife and I are planning a trip. We were trying to stay in Texas, but with the lack of rain, the river conditions here will not allow it.
Our goal is a two-day float with some nice fishing and camping with some class II rapids every now and then.
We will leave central Texas on a Saturday night and hope to float on Sunday and Monday.
Please help with some places to go and some reputable outfitters. (we plan to rent kayaks)
Thanks!

Re: Change of plans
The Caddo is a nice little class I & II river with plenty of great trips on it. Go here http://www.caddoriver.com/Canoeing.html to explore options but be aware since all of these storms you could run into some interesting up-side-down trees in the river. (sideways ones too) And be sure to watch the levels as anything less than 5.5' or so is a rock garden. Jim Krueger is the guy to talk to about the Caddo, I'm sure he'll spot your post soon.
I've felt the touch of healing hands, neath the willow trees and birch, cause the water's my religion, and the river is my church. Kenny

Paddlefan,
I'll echo Connie's suggestion on the Caddo. The Caddo should be very nice this weekend! If you'd like to stay in more comfortable, motel, accomodations, I'd recommend to stay in Hot Springs, then with a day trip over to Glenwood to float the Caddo, from Caddo Gap to Glenwood on the river. Arrowhead Canoe Rentals&Campground, or Caddo River Cabins and Canoe Rental in Glenwood can take care of your shuttle needs if you have your own gear, or provide you with boats. (See their websites) If you'd care to camp, both outfitters have campgrounds also. (I don't think you would be disappointed :) The Caddo is one of the best class I+-II rivers in this part of the state. The Smallmouth Bass fishing is picking up very well now as the water warms, so I think you'll like that too. My fishing recommendations are to start fairly early and use ultra-lite rod&reels, #6 line with 1/4oz leadhead hooks with baby brush hogs or similar pumpkin seed dark green colored jigs. I hope you all have fun.
Best Regards
